Stay a while to share my thoughts on writing and life.

The World Blog Hop

The World Blog Hop baton moves from writer to writer across the blogosphere, and it was passed on to me by author and poet G. Michael Vasey. Check out G. Michael Vasey’s recent novel and even more recent poetry book, here

I am supposed to describe my personal writing process and then pass on the assignment to another writer and blogger. I am not quite sure where to start, so here is my best shot at describing this indescribable process:

Writing often feels to me as if I am ‘downloading’ things from somewhere, as if it is all ‘out there’ and I am just connecting to it and tapping it onto the screen in front of me. Perhaps this is what others call ‘inspiration’. I think it can be better described as connecting to some kind of collective consciousness, in the Jungian sense of the phrase. The thing is, I actually need to be sitting down in front of my computer to be able to capture what comes. Sometimes, I could be sitting there for a while – surfing the internet, answering emails and connecting on Facebook. But once the internal chatter is off and the distractions have been put aside, there is a direct channel that opens – a direct channel to a world of stories.

The themes change and the hours of the day or night don’t matter – although my favorite writing time is 3-5am – but there is one thing that is constant. This is the exhilaration I feel when a story that pops up in my head turns into something tangible, palatable, readable.

I always knew that I would become a writer one day, as this connectedness to the world of stories always existed. However, I also knew that I needed to learn about life first, to experience, to live, before I can share things on paper and with the world. It started with poetry and short stories, it then moved to political writing and then – with age and wisdom – to spiritual and inspirational writing. Everyone changes with time and life experience, and for writers, it can be reflected in their writing, which matures and, hopefully, improves.

These days I am working on my first inspirational novel – a story of intertwined past lives – and I try to minimise distractions, which are ever-present. I am hoping to finish it by the end of 2014 and have it out before the end of 2015.

In the mean time, please check out my upcoming short-story collection, titled Collecting Feathers: tales from The Other Side (Soul Rocks Books, November 2014) – I do hope you will find something to inspire you in it. The World Hop Blog baton will now pass to Nancy Freund, writer, friend and author of Rapeseed – a novel that deals with the phenomenon of synesthesia and explores what it means to be a family and questions: are we what we are born into?
